Corona pre treatment has become one of the most widely used processes to modify the surface of polymeric films, aluminium foils, paper and board as well as textiles to increase their surface tensions prior to printing, coating or lamination.

The corona discharge, with its charectistic purple glow, is produced by ionisation of the air between the high voltage electrodes and the earthed base roll. The resulting ions react with the polymeric chains forming oxide compounds, which in turn lead to an increase in surface energy levels.
